Help/Make Up Work
I am available before and after school most days. Thursdays after school are set aside specifically for tutoring, but I am often available other days as well. Please do not hesitate to ask for help or practice. Language builds on the skills learned, so please see me as soon as you are having trouble. If you don’t understand something, chances are that the next skill learned will be even harder to learn. I will usually be in my room after school, but please let me know ahead of time (if possible) if you want help, so that I can make sure to be available.
You may also contact me at home via e-mail, the class website or Facebook (see Kontakt page for contact info). I am happy to help you with any questions. I guarantee to answer e-mails sent before 8pm. After that, it may have to wait until the next day.
Calendar and Projects
I am providing a calendar with all test dates and homework assignments. The calendar can also be seen on my website under the Kalender section. Dates on the calendar reflect the due dates, not the dates assigned. Changes to assignments and test dates will be posted online as well as announced in class. Attached is also an outline of the portfolio projects expected.
Websites
The class website is a convenient way to keep track of homework assignments and test dates. It also contains class notes and any handouts given in class. It is linked to the school website or directly accessible. I rarely go more than 2 days without uploading class notes, but occasionally I get busy and forget, so if I do not post class notes or something else that was given out in class, feel free to shoot me an e-mail to remind me. There are also links to online German games, news sites and dictionary and grammar help pages in the links sections. There is also a Facebook page under Frau Umstot. I do not post assignments there, but it is another option for keeping in touch with me outside of school hours and for finding out events for German and GSA clubs. Please keep in mind that it is a professional Facebook page, so keep posts appropriate.
This year we will be using Google Classrooms for turning in assignments and projects outside of Passport, Duolingo, and Conjuguemos.
Parents/Guardians
I am always glad to speak with you. Please contact me with any comments, questions or concerns. You may call my voicemail at any time and leave a message. I will return your call as soon as possible. I can also be reached by either email address listed above, or through the class website or class Facebook page. I check my e-mail throughout the day until 8pm (sometimes later if I am busy up to that point).
I’m looking forward to getting to know and working with you this year.
Course Description
German 2 expands on the basic German skills learned in German 1. Emphasis is placed on all four communicative skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Course Objectives
- Expand upon and use vocabulary already known
- Further expand knowledge of Germanic cultures
- Further ability to carry on short conversations
- Learn to read and write basic sentences and paragraphs.
Materials to bring every day
- Earbuds/earphones for computer work.
- charged Chromebook – textbooks are online this year, so this is very important
- 3-ring binder or folder (with all German handouts and notes)
- Notebook or loose leaf paper
- Writing utensils - at least one pen and another of a different color
- Recommended for home: German/English dictionary newer than 2005 (German spelling and grammar rules were updated and changed in 2005).
Homework policy
- Homework must be ready at the beginning of class to be on time.
- Late homework will receive a 20% reduction if turned in by the beginning of the next class period and after that a 50% deduction. No assignments will be accepted more than two weeks late.
- Projects will receive a 10% reduction per day late (including days without class).
Grading Policy
- The standard school grading policy applies.
- 9 weeks grade will be based on the following:
o Quizzes = 30%
o Class Work = 20%
o Written Work = 20%
Classroom expectations
- Follow school behavior expectations.
- Be respectful, responsible, and ready to work.
- Learning to speak a language requires speaking, so give everyone a chance to practice speaking, with the same courtesy you want when you speak—remember everyone will make mistakes, it’s part of learning.
- Participate
- School policies for tardies and absences apply.
- Tardies: Please be in your seat and ready to begin work when the bell rings.
- Absences: It is YOUR responsibility to come to me and find out what you need to make up after an absence. An excused absence does NOT excuse you from doing the missed work.
- Field trips: You must get make up work for field trips BEFORE the field trip. Homework and classwork assignments are due the day you return. We will arrange a time for quiz/test make up.
